There has been a quite dramatic advance in laptop design over the last few years; resulting in the arrival of netbooks. Lighter, cheaper and more portable than the traditional laptop, they are a long way removed from their humble beginnings as a solution to providing developing countries with affordable and accessible computers.

This excellent project, which continues to help those less fortunate and vulnerable, was just the start however. In the western world, sales have soared in the recent global economic downturn, whilst sales of traditional laptops and most certainly home desktop computers has all but bottomed out, to all intent and purposes.

In part of course, this has been as a direct result of the reduced cost of the technology; often at a quarter of the price. That performance for most casual users is no different, in essence, to their incumbents too has been significant. But the real drive has been because of their extreme portability; being not much bigger than the filofax of the eighties,

For business users, if would be fair to suggest that they are not that practical; but it is not this market that the product is targeted at. This.lies instead with leisure users; who find their netbooks are perfectly able to cope with internet surfing and basic word processing jobs with ease.

The technology has been possible because of the reduced size, and performance in components. Processors in particular have been slimmed down, whilst batteries too have been attended to. This does not really have negative effects however; as the lesser functionality requires less power in the first place.

The quality of the kit itself has not been reduced either. Whilst screen sizes are obviously smaller; they are not ridiculously small. Screens are most often touchscreen affairs too, whilst the keyboards are very near to a full sized standard laptop keyboard. With a many connectivity options too; certain peripherals can be added if necessary.

There have been a few teething problems however. When first released, the only operating system offered was a Linux OS. Being unfamiliar to many consumers, this proved troublesome. However, it was not too long before favored Windows OS were being loaded, though these did cause issues regards the power needed on occasion.

However, many have kept with it; and improvements were made across the board which allowed for adequate processing speeds of the popular Windows software. With Windows Seven released recently, things are set to improve too; whilst a bespoke version is in development for netbooks.
