Keep The Windows Registry Clean

Windows contains a central database: the registry. In the registry there is information about your computer, its environment, and the users. But a “clean” Windows registry… What is that?

If it contains only valid keys and data concerning the present system state, the registry is clean. This means all the information about the user profiles and preferences, the computer software, and the computer hardware is up to date. There is detailed information, such as file associations that inform Windows which applications use which files. Names of the applications installed are stored with their directory paths, along with software components such as ActiveX objects. Information concerning computer security is stored in the registry. Indices, catalogs, and account numbers are found there. A huge quantity of data essential to the computer is kept in the registry, in other words.

What Are the Advantages of a Clean Windows Registry?

When there aren’t any registry errors your computer can run faster, without system crashes or application errors. If the data stored in the registry is not accurate, the computer will not work as it should. If some of the files were moved but the registry was not updated to reflect these changes, imagine what would happen. Windows can no longer find things it requires. Sometimes Windows can find and fix an error and then continue its operations, with just a hiccup. But if there are too many errors in the registry (or a single critical error), the computer may terminate an application or even stop working altogether. Much of the time Windows cannot find or detect the errors in the registry. Registry errors can cause cryptic error messages and all sorts of weird problems, making your system unreliable.

What about when Windows must sift through lots of useless information in the registry that it no longer needs and never uses? Windows must search the registry database very often, so this can also be a problem. This searching is slowed down, due to the trash left in the registry. What is it that fills the registry with this trash and causes registry errors? By installing and uninstalling a single application, you can leave behind tens or even hundreds of useless registry entries. What happens when the install process or the uninstall process fails? It can leave an ugly mess in the registry. Unless the registry is cleaned, part of the information doesn’t remain accurate.

Malware and computer viruses are another cause of registry errors. A malicious program can often cause terrible damage.

What Can You Do To Maintain A Clean Windows Registry?

If you erase everything on the hard disk and then reinstall Windows and all of your applications you will end up with a clean registry. Some experts will recommend that you do this. But not many people can afford this extreme solution. An expert user may also decide to fix the errors manually with an editor. But this procedure is dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you should change. Editing the registry manually can take hours.

A safer and faster solution is to use a registry cleaner application. These programs can find and fix the errors in your registry quickly. Your system will start faster and run faster with a clean Windows registry. And it will produce fewer application errors, system crashes, and error messages.
