How To Organize A Desk

Organization has many useful benefits, and that is no secret. As a whole, people who are organized are generally more productive and relaxed. To be a better worker, having your office or home desk organized will be helpful.

The first step in organizing the space is clearing everything off and out of it. It’s important to start with a clean slate and have a visual image of every item that was stored in the space. Large items like computers and printers can remain where they are but everything else should come off. You will most likely find things that don’t belong there but have found their way to it. These items should be placed back in their home locations.

Next you should thoroughly clean your work station. After the top has been cleared off, wipe it down with a damp cloth. Dump out all of the drawers and throw away the small pieces of paper and bits of trash that have accumulated at the bottom. You can also recycle any papers that you no longer need and dust of any electrical devices with canned air.

At your local department store, purchase some containers that you can use at your workspace. Organizers such as these will both look good and help you manage your time better. Depending on your own needs, get things like pencil cups, inbox trays, and drawer organizers. If your workspace was cluttered up with personal objects, consider buying a small wall shelf that you can hang near your desk to display them.

After you have cleared off your space and purchased organizers, go through your belongings and prioritize them. Things that you use often, pens and scotch tape, should be kept within arm’s reach. Lesser used items can be stored in drawers or shelves. If you find things that are not a priority to the work you do at your desk, consider moving them to save room.

To help keep the documents and papers more organized, begin a filing system for your space. The tabbed folders can be purchased at a local retail store if you do not already have some. Use them for topics such as “Completed Projects” and “Tax Documents”. The system is also useful for things that you have to keep on hand but do not have to refer to each day. A simple lock can be placed on the top of the drawer if you do choose to store sensitive papers in it.

To keep on track with your updated work life, get a wall calendar and a “To-Do” tray. Display them on the surface and within reach so you will be more likely to use them. A calendar will assist you in maintaining long term targets or projects and a “To-Do” tray will help you in keeping on top of your short term deadlines.

Take a few minutes at the end of each day and tidy up the area. Pick up any empty coffee cups and throw away your trash. This habit will ensure your work space remains an organized and relaxed environment. It will also ensure that being organized soon becomes a second nature to you.
