Choosing a Home Security Company

A home security company should help relieve concerns about the safety of your family and of your home. Take special care when choosing a company to sign up with. There is no gain in having a faulty security system installed or relying on an incompetent company for assistance when trouble occurs. Make sure that the company you choose fits well with your families daily lives and includes the level of protection that you most desire.

Start looking for a good home security company right in your neighborhood. Ask your neighbors who they use, if anyone, and check with friends that live nearby. You may be able to include or eliminate options that you may not have considered. Call your local police department and see if they have any suggestions since they sometimes work directly with monitoring companies. Try and find as much information as you can.

Always look for some official certification or license. Most often there will be a division or agency run by the local government that will issue licenses for home security companies. A handful of national licensing agencies exist, though these are largely private and unregulated institutions. Be sure and check the general business record of the security company, especially the Better Business Bureau, who will keep a list of complaints that have been filed.

Make sure you fully understand the services that the security company is providing. There are companies that will simply install alarms to protect your windows and doors from entry. There are other companies that will install alarms and other devices to allow remote monitoring of your home. These companies may also monitor your home for you and take action in the case of any unusual activity. Be very aware of exactly what you are going to buy.

Look at the keypads, controls and devices that get installed. Understand what each one does and how it interacts with the others. Measure out the size of the control panel, if you can not find one to look at in person, and check that your fingers will be able to comfortably use the buttons or dials. Take a look at the display panel and status lights, they should be easy to read and clearly understandable.

Page through the service contract you are given. Take as much time as needed to read and understand each part. For installations and other one-time jobs, make sure there are stated warranties. If a camera system is installed and does not function a week later, it should clearly stated in the contract that they will repair or replace the system at no cost. All of the information about monthly fees or special charges for advanced services should be explicitly listed when reviewing a contract for a monitoring service. A good home security company should have a good contract.

Do not be afraid to complain to your home security company if you are not getting the service you want. If installations are not working properly or the monitoring service does not respond quickly, let the company know. They may be able to fix these problems promptly. If, on the other hand, you do not get the response you want from their customer service, look into moving on to another company. While this may be a hassle with a monitor company, the feeling of security you will get when you trust the company that watches your home will pay for itself.
