This ultracompact notebook rocks! It’s perfect for travelers. It really does put the “mobile” into “mobile computing.”

I’ve used this puppy for almost 14 hours at a time (!!) in power-saving mode (and 11 hours in normal mode), and coupled with its tiny size and weight, I don’t think you can get more portable than with the seashell inspired Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1 notebook computer. Basically, with this laptop, you don’t need to worry about plugging in no matter where you go. Can I also say the Asus Seashell design on this baby is quite pretty as well. Now, let’s take a look at the computer’s hardware specs for a moment.

Measuring just 10.3 by 7 by a thin 1.4 inches, the Asus Eee PC 1005PE weighs in at a mere 2.8 pounds. I remember my first laptop weighed a whopping 7.8 lbs… this thing is a feather in comparison. The Asus EEE PC is sturdily built and more more solid-feeling then photographs would indicate.

It has a 1.66 GHz Atom N450 Intel CPU with a 667 MHz front side bus, which only draws 2.5 watts of power. And luckily it really is no slouch when it comes to the performance department, especially for a notebook this small. It’s the fastest processor available in its class. There’s also a feature called the Asus Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) which allows you to control the speed of the processor with the press of a key. You can use it to save battery power when you’re just doodling around, such as surfing the Internet. It comes standard with one gigabyte of DDR2 RAM, and you can upgrade it to 2GB.

The screen size is 10.1 inches across, and it’s surprisingly usable — I use it on an everyday basis and I never got any sort of eyestrain at all. The WSVGA resolution is a sharp 1024 by 600 pixels, and the display quality is brilliant. It’s easy to read webpages or do some word processing. One cool feature offered by aces is that if you find even one dead pixel on your screen within 30 days of purchase, they will replace the screen for you. How’s that for service?

Connectivity is convenient and easy — the asus eee pc 1005pe notebook’s got built-in wireless 802.11n (backward compatible with b and g) as well as integrated Bluetooth v2.1.

The keyboard is small but surprisingly roomy. It’s about ninety-two percent of the size of a full scale keyboard. My hands are fairly small for a guy, and I had no problems typing full speed on this keyboard. If you have really big hands are really fat fingers, it might be a different issue. Ladies should have no problems whatsoever.

The touchpad support multi-touch, which means you can use more than one finger at a time, and it works really smoothly and accurately. You can easily scroll up and down and left and right, and zoom in and out with a two fingered gesture — trust me, it’s really convenient.

The included hard drive is a 250 GB SATA drive, which should be sufficient unless you’re doing some kind of serious hard-core movie editing; in that case, this laptop probably isn’t appropriate for you anyway. You do get access to 500 GB of Asus web storage if you really need to store more data.

The included operating system is Windows 7 starter, 32 bit edition, and it’s snappy even with one gigabyte of RAM and all aero effects turned on. There’s a built in flash reader that reads MMC, SD, and SDHC cards, making it easy to transfer pictures from your digital camera. It also has three USB 2.0 ports, which is a lot for a notebook this small. There’s also an RJ45 ethernet port, and headphone and mic jacks.

Finally, the Asus eee pc 1005pe has a built-in .3 megapixel web cam and a digital mic, and comes with a padded travel sleeve. This little baby’s got it all.

Allow me to mention one more time, can you believe the battery life!!! I know, I know, laptop manufacturers always tend to over-exaggerate the amount of battery time of their products. But this notebook literally runs for over 10 hours on a single recharge. That’s a transcontinental flight, plus change! In comparison, my older Fujitsu LifeBook runs about two hours before pooping out. I love taking this little notebook with me literally everywhere I go.

Quick tip, when you plug in the AC adapter, push it in fully until it clicks. Also, some people have complained about not being able to change the desktop image; however, this is easily done by downloading a wallpaper software from the Asus website. Finally, there have been some reports of minor issues with the power supply and keyboard on earlier models like the Asus 1005pe-mu17-wt or Asus 1005HA. Thankfully, they have been resolved with this new 1005PE model.

Not only does it run fast and cool and have this impressive collection of features, the Asus Eee PC 1005PE PU17 Seashell looks sexy and stylish with its smooth glossy surface and seashell-like design. What more could you ask for?

The Asus EEE PC seashell 1005pe is a wonderful computer, and one of my best purchases. The price is incredible too, I tell you to find any comparable notebook computer for less than $400. If you take long flights on airplanes frequently, or simply want an ultracompact notebook to take with you everywhere you go, this notebook will be a godsend for you.

Note that ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BU 10.1 is the blue model, and ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1 is the black model. I prefer black myself, but of course that’s a personal choice.
