Metropolis: A private investigator and his nephew track a suspect to the futuristic Metropolis, meet a bizarre gal who is really an extremely commanding android, and decipher a message sent by a rebel forces leader who plans to take over the city. This is an amazing Japanese animated movie. It is written by Katsuhiro Otomo Akira, based on a visual novel by Osamu Tezuka called Astro Boy. Rich backdrops balance with cartoon looking lead characters, although dramatic storytelling and commanding visuals defeat film’s shortcomings. Cast includes Kei Kobayashi, Kohki Okada, Taro Ishida, and Kousei Tomita. (106 minutes, 2001)

The Prince and the Showgirl: Fairly good but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the 1911 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with admirable performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes, 1957)

A Cry in The Dark: The amazing true tale of Lindy Chamberlain, an Australian female implicated of killing her infant, in spite of her claims that the youngster was taken by a dingo (a wild Australian dog). Author-director Schepisi informs his tale with nearly documentary like actuality, eloquently assaulting the format of trial by story that made Chamberlain and her spouse the most maligned couple in Australia. Streep and Neill are heartbreakingly excellent. Cast includes Meryl Streep, Sam Neill, Bruce Myles, Charles Tingwell, Notch Tate, and Lewis Fitzgerald. (121 minutes, 1988)

Mrs. Brown: Gratifying drama set in the 1860s. Monarch Victoria Bench has been in grieving for years, following the death of her cherished spouse Albert; living in Windsor Castle, away from London and city life, she only comes out of her shell when her spouse’s believed Highland rider, John Brown Connolly, declines to pamper her. Cast includes Judi Bench, Billy Connolly, Geoffrey Palmer, Antony Sher, Gerald Butler, Richard Pasco, and David Westhead. (103 minutes, 1997)

Basic: While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to query the surviving members of the squad, whose tales don’t add up. Peter Pan Return To Neverland: An animated family film of a Peter Pan adventure. Wendy’s daughter Jane is an unbeliever. When Captain Hook steals her away to Neverland, she must learn to believe if she wants to escape back to the real world.
